Safeguarding at NIS
At NIS, safeguarding is more than a policy—it is a culture of care, respect and shared responsibility. We believe that every child has the right to learn in an environment where they feel safe, valued and supported to reach their full potential. Through strong leadership, well-trained staff, robust campus security and a commitment to international best practice, we work together to ensure every member of our community can learn with confidence.
Safeguarding Leadership & Training
At NIS, creating a safe, respectful and nurturing environment is a shared commitment across our entire school community. Our Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), Michelle Arthur, works closely with the Head of School, Student Support Services and school leaders to coordinate and strengthen safeguarding practices across the school, helping to ensure that a culture of safeguarding, care and child protection is embedded throughout every aspect of school life. Every member of our staff completes safeguarding training as part of their induction and continues to participate in mandatory safeguarding training throughout their employment at NIS.
The Head of School, Student Support Services and school leaders also undertake regular specialist professional development with trusted international safeguarding providers, ensuring our policies, procedures and practices continue to reflect the highest international standards of child protection and student wellbeing.
Parents and carers are encouraged to contact our Designated Safeguarding Lead if they have any questions or concerns regarding the safety or wellbeing of a child.
Safe Learning Environment
NIS provides a secure, modern learning environment where the safety of our students, staff and visitors is supported through carefully designed systems, highly trained personnel, and clearly defined safety policies and emergency procedures. Our campus is monitored by professional security staff, controlled access points, visitor identification procedures and a comprehensive CCTV surveillance system, helping to maintain a safe, welcoming and well-supervised environment throughout the school day.
To ensure we are prepared for any situation, the campus is equipped with a modern fire detection and alarm system, a public address (PA) system for clear communication, and well-established lockdown and emergency evacuation policies and procedures. Regular drills and staff training ensure that emergency responses can be carried out calmly, efficiently and with the wellbeing of our students as the highest priority.
Student Wellbeing & Digital Safety
Safeguarding extends beyond physical safety. At NIS, we are committed to promoting every child’s emotional wellbeing and helping students develop the confidence to speak to trusted adults whenever they need support. We foster a culture of kindness, inclusion and respect through positive relationships, proactive behaviour education and clear anti-bullying practices.
As technology becomes an increasingly important part of learning, students are also supported to become responsible digital citizens. Through age-appropriate online safety education, we help students develop the knowledge and skills to use technology safely, responsibly and respectfully both inside and outside the classroom.
Commitment to International Best Practice
Safeguarding is continually evolving, and we are committed to strengthening our practices through ongoing professional learning, collaboration and continuous improvement. Norea International School is actively seeking membership of the Cambodia International Schools Safeguarding Association (CISSA), enabling us to collaborate with leading international schools across Cambodia, share best practices and continue developing our safeguarding culture in line with the highest international standards of child protection and student wellbeing.
